Mr. W. Lester Bowie Sr.

Mr. W. Lester Bowie Sr., 95, of Frederick, died Tuesday, Oct. 17 at Frederick Memorial Hospital after a brief illness.
He was the husband of the late Earxie L. Bowie.
Born April 13, 1905, in Frederick, he was a son of the late Emory Columbus Bowie and Mary Ellen Thomas.
He graduated from Lincoln High School, Frederick, in 1925. He attended Storer Teachers College and received his bachelor's degree in 1936 at Hampton Institute in Virginia, and his master's degree from the University of Wyoming in 1950.
He began teaching at Morrison School for Boys in North Carolina. He then moved to Little Rock, Ark., and taught at Dunbar High School. He met his wife in Little Rock and they moved to St. Louis, Mo., where he taught for the St. Louis Public School System. He taught music and English until 1973, when he retired.
He moved back to Frederick in 1983. He was former president and member of the Human Relations Council of Frederick County and the Frederick County Scholarship Committee. He formed the Weekenders Bridge Club and was a member of the American Bridge Association. He was also a member of the Frederick Bridge Club and American Congress of Bridge Leagues.
He was a lifelong member of St. James A.M.E. Church, Bartonsville.
He is survived by two sons, Byron K. Bowie and Joseph A. Bowie, both of Bartonsville; seven grandchildren, Larry Stevenson of Sardegna, Italy, Ju'lene Coney of St. Louis, Bahnamous Bowie of New York, Neuka Mitchell of St. Louis, Sukari Ivester of Chicago, Ill., Nitara Bowie of Greensboro, N.C., and Zola Bowie of New York; and many great-grandchildren, nieces, nephews, other family members, and friends.
The family will receive friends Monday, Oct. 23, from 6 to 8 p.m. at Gary L. Rollins Funeral Home, 110 W. South St., Frederick, with reflection services being held at 7 p.m. at the funeral home. Visitation will be from noon until 8 p.m.
Funeral services will be held at St. James A.M.E. Church, 6002 Bartonsville Road, Frederick, on Tuesday, Oct. 24, at 11 a.m.
Interment will be in Bartonsville Cemetery.
In lieu of flowers or gifts, donations can be made to the Frederick County Scholarship Fund or St. James A.M.E. Church on behalf of W. Lester Bowie Sr.

William married Earxie Willingham Bowie. (Earxie Willingham Bowie was born on 19 Apr 1916 and died on 4 Apr 1982.)
